Publications Natural Dyes Quilt Gallery Lucy Diggs Home Our Unique Quilts
Most quilts made since 1860 have been made with fabric dyed with chemical dyes. Not so the quilts from Diggs Dyeworks. Here we dye all the fabric used to make our quilts using the same natural dyes and methods that dyed all fabric up until the mid-nineteenth century when chemical dyes were introduced. The old natural dyes (think the gowns of Queen Elizabeth I, the rugs of the Persian sultans, the blue jeans designed and made by Levi Straus) produce colors of great subtlety, softness, vibrancy and range very unlike the rather one-dimensional chemically dyed fabrics of today. In keeping with the antique dyes, most of the designs are traditional. All of the quilts are designed and made by Lucy Diggs using hand-dyed, 100% natural fabrics, mostly cotton, but also some cotton-linen and cotton-silk blends. All quilts are machine pieced and hand quilted using 100% cotton thread and 10-stitches-to-the-inch quilting. Battings, backing and bindings are also 100% cotton.
